Valparaíso Region, Juan Fernández Commune
The Juan Fernández Archipelago National Park includes the islands of Alejandro Selkirk, Robinson Crusoe, and Santa Clara, and is located 600 kilometers off the Chilean coast. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve for research and conservation purposes, thanks to its rich flora and fauna. Furthermore, its waters are extraordinary for diving. The archipelago is known not only for its extraordinary lobster, but also for the Scottish sailor Alejandro Selkirk, who inspired Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe. Robinson Crusoe Island was used as a prison between 1814 and 1817 for patriots fighting against the Spanish for Chilean independence.
