It is located in the Atacama Desert, in a place known as the "altiplano" (high plateau), in an area with one of the highest concentrations of mountains over 6,000 meters in the Andes Mountains. Its 6,067 meters above sea level make Vicuña an excellent challenge for lovers of high peaks, as well as an excellent ascent option for those wishing to acclimatize to climb the area's greatest challenge: the Ojos del Salado Volcano.
